While traditional physiotherapy methods take place in-person between a patient and physiotherapist, there are various obstacles that can inhibit this interaction—a relevant and timely example of this being the current pandemic. Other in-person appointment barriers include those traveling to places away from their clinic or those in rural areas where there are no clinics within a reasonable distance.

Virtual physiotherapy is an option that conquers these barriers, given that it is mobile, accessible, and sustainable for those with access to a computer and internet connection who cannot be present in the clinical setting.

How do virtual physiotherapy sessions work?

Virtual sessions can be booked over the phone or online—just make sure you indicate that you would prefer your appointment to be virtual. Before your appointment we will reach out to discuss which online platform works best for you. If you do not have access to video, then we are happy to discuss the possibility of a telephone appointment, but this option often works best for follow-up sessions.

How does virtual physiotherapy differ from an in-person session at the clinic?

Virtual sessions differ from in-person sessions in that there is no passive treatment, where the therapist performs manual therapy techniques. If you feel comfortable to do so, your therapist can recommend some manual techniques that you can do yourself. However, research shows that education and exercise are the most effective treatments for many physiotherapy-related conditions, specifically those that involve pain.

Some objective assessments can be done virtually, but may be limited depending on the safety of the client (eg. balance testing). In these cases, there is the option to have the initial assessment in-person and follow-up appointments virtually.

Above is a video of Beech Street Health Centre physiotherapist, Haley Flewwelling, virtually demonstrating stretches for a patient as part of their treatment plan. This is an example of how communication can be portrayed through virtual physiotherapy and a closer look into what you might receive if you go that route.

Who can benefit from virtual physiotherapy sessions?

Everyone can benefit from virtual therapy sessions. They are ideal for those who are limited by geography, child-care, time, transportation, or are socially isolating. Virtual sessions are helpful because it allows the therapist into the client’s space. This is helpful when recommending home adaptations and ergonomic assessments. Sessions also include education and evidence-based exercise prescriptions. Because the appointments are through video, the therapist can observe while the client completes their exercise program to ensure they are doing them correctly and safely.

Will virtual physiotherapy sessions be relevant and extend beyond the pandemic?

Yes. We will offer virtual treatments for as long as the clients wish to receive them. While many insurance companies have agreed to cover virtual physiotherapy sessions during the covid-19 pandemic, we always recommend checking with your insurance provider to make sure. Your physiotherapy treatment plan does not need to come to a halt given the new world the pandemic has shaped or because you are not located in the city of Halifax. Continue your journey to wellness with Beech Street Health Centre from the comfort of your own home and reap the benefits of virtual physiotherapy.
